Trying a New Advertising Method on One of My Blogs

I’m doing something different for advertising in 2009 on one of my blogs.  Instead of selling various ads types (Adsense, Affiliate, Text Links, BlogHer, etc), I’m going to focus on building Sponsor a Post Ads. I want  to remove my text link ads in my side bar and and the large AdSense ad on the top left without greatly sacrificing revenue.

My goal with Sponsor a Post Ads is to build income without annoying too many readers. I want to reduce unnecessary clutter from my site. I don’t want it to be like Times Square with the content ‘hidden’. I’m looking to improving my blog for the upcoming year.

I’ve been wanting to change the advertising setup for my personal finance blog for a bit, but I had a hard time finding something that would fit with my idea for ads. I wanted to responsibly advertise on my blog without hurting the blog’s intentions, annoying my readers, or blur the line between content and ads. I’ve been on different forums for bloggers on monetizing sites, but most methods didn’t appeal to me. I’m not a fan of pay per post because even if  the review is relevant to my blog and I can be completely honest, it’ll still taint the perception of my blog to my readers.

I used some Performacing Ads, but then some inappropriate images from a plastic surgery site came up (on a personal finance site?).  I’m grateful it was caught quickly (I have great readers!) It definitely conflicted with my image for the site and didn’t provide value for the majority of my readers. I still have a spot for Performacing Ads, but I’m watching it carefully.

How Will I Implement the Ads

I’m going to honor my text link ads until the agreement expires. When advertisers inquire for the blog, I’ll be directing them towards the Sponsor a Post system. My big concern is showing the value for the seller versus having them buy a text link ad.

I’m also going to migrate from the Adsense on the sidebar and have it on single posts with no sponsors.  I’m just working on how this will go, so Ill definitely update this site as I make the transition.

What are my plans for ads on this site?

If I decide to do advertising on this site, it’ll be determined later after I find  a way that builds income without cutting into the quality of the blog. For now, I’m not going to put up Adsense, BlogHer, etc.

If you have a site, how do you balance ads with content? As a reader, what kind of ads annoy you?
