How to Write a Good Job Recommendation

by Laura P on February 12, 2009

Here are some tips on writing a good job recommendation for a co-worker.

  • Include the current date with letters. Hopefully you stay in contact with them, so they can update this as needed.
  • Using the person’s first name makes it seem as you have a comfortable relationship with the person being recommended.
  • Please do include an honest assessment of the work relationship. I hope it’s positive. If it’s negative, don’t lie! Be polite and decline to write a letter for them. After all the prospective employer is looking for someone skilled AND a people person.
  • Describe the person’s position and the context of how they help the company.
  • Describe your position and how it relates to the recommended person. It helps with establishing your creditability in this recommendation.

To whom it may concern:

I am pleased to write this letter of recommendation for Jane Smith.  Jane worked with me in the Operations Department at ABC Industries for 2 years. She began here as resupply manager and continued to serve with increasing skill in that capacity .

During Jane’s service with us I, like many others in the department, came to know and appreciate her.  Very goal oriented, Jane was always punctual, yet easygoing.  She was dedicated to her work and the job at hand.

Jane demonstrated from early in her tenure that she understood what business is all about. She was well organized. Almost without exception, she put the customer first, feeling as I do that the key to good business is satisfied customers. I suppose doing well in business is easy if you are, as she was, driven by quality.

I would like to be very clear about why Jane is no longer with us.  Jane is available for new challenges only because of her desire to learn and grow further. We would have loved to see her stay, but certainly understand her need to advance beyond the positions we have available.

In closing, let me say I have no hesitation in recommending Jane Smith for any management position in inventory management.  I feel confident she would be an asset to your organization.

Sincerely,
